Public Health + Environmental Justice

PH+_Socials_DeJarnett_EnvironmentalJustice_V1-04.png

While climate change is often seen as a looming threat of the future, its devastating effects are happening right now. Flooding, hurricanes, air pollution, wildfires. Layered on top is the racial and economic inequality that runs deep and worsens the outcomes of these environmental catastrophes for vulnerable communities. Our current moment of historic climate emergencies, COVID-19, and the movement for Black lives presents the push for needed change. It’s crucial our understanding and framing of the health and climate issues at large adjust to reflect these deeply systemic issues in order to progress towards a healthier society and planet.

Join us in learning from Natasha DeJarnett, Ph.D., MPH, a leader in environmental health research and assistant professor in the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute at the University of Louisville Division of Environmental Medicine, about the overlap of these issues and where we go from here. This conversation will be facilitated by Sophie Becker, a design strategist at Orange Sparkle Ball, and is part of the Public Health + series, which examines innovative places where public health intersects with other disciplines.

About the Public Health+ Series

Public health touches nearly every aspect of our world, as is becoming clearer every day. This series of conversations was conceived to examine the space where public health intersects with other disciplines. Our goal is to highlight those at this intersection, discuss their work and broaden our thinking. This series is led by the Career Development Committee of the Rollins School of Public Health Alumni Association Board in collaboration with Orange Sparkle Ball.
